Welcome to decuser’s blog
Topics on this blog include computing, retro-computing, operating systems, math, and whatever other technical subjects I happen to be exploring that I find interesting enough to take and share notes about.

Site Update for December 2, 2022
Everything up through June 29, 2022 is live. If you see any problems, shoot me an email. In the meantime, I’m working on getting the rest of 2022 posted and then I will take care of the explorations tabs. I also have some ideas for new content that I would like to get posted before I take a break.

Site Update for December 1, 2022
Everything up through 2018 is live. If you see any problems, shoot me an email. In the meantime, I’m working on 2020-present. I’m excited. Markdown is so straightforward. Once I get the existing content up and running, I’ll be able to add new posts quickly and easily. Can’t wait!

Under Construction Notice
This blog is currently under construction. As part of the migration discussed in Welcome Post (Nov 29, 2022), I am moving content from various places into the blog. The Exploration links will eventually refer to content that I bring in or add, but for now they just link to this notice. I am working from oldest to newest and just finished 2002-2015. I’ll be moving the rest little by little to backfill. Please be patient!

Welcome to Decuser's Blog on GitHub
This Blog ranges over diverse technical topics such as Retrocomputing, Unix, and Programming
Over the coming weeks, I will be moving my blog posts over from blogspot to here. My reason for moving is apolitcal and is simply because I wanted more control over my content. With GitHub Pages, my content is my own and it is simple to create new posts. With blogspot, it was difficult to do backups and creating content was a pain as well. Here’s hoping the transition will be relatively painless :).

Installing and Using Research Unix Version 7 in the OpenSIMH PDP-11/45 and 11/70 Emulators 3.0
This note covers building a working v7 instance from tape files that will run in the OpenSImH emulator. First, the reader is led through the restoration of a pristine v7 instance from tape to disk. Next, the reader is led through adding a regular user and making the system multi-user capable. Then, the reader is shown how to make the system multi-session cable to allow multiple simultaneous sessions. Finally, the system is put to use with hello world, DMR style, and the learn system is enabled.
The note explains each step of the process in detail.

Notoriously S.L.O.W BASIC
This week, I spent some time writing code for my m100. On my list of things to do with the little machine, was to write a disassembler. In order to disassemble memory, it helps to know what’s there, so I decided to write a memory dump utility first.

Installing and Using Unix V6 in the Open SIMH PDP-11 Emulator
This note details the process of building a working v6 instance from a copy of the original tape distribution. The v6 instance runs in a virtual PDP-11/40 provided by OpenSIMH, a masterwork emulator.
